The book "Stand van de Stedenbouw" (State of Urban Development) by the BNSP brings together nearly 250 leading plans. One of the seven plans included by SVP Architecture and Urban Development is the transformation of the Enka Campus in Arnhem, also known as the Zijdekwartier.

Factory site becomes dynamic urban district

As with many transformations of industrial areas, the former Enka site (later AKZO) offers both opportunities and challenges. Over the coming years, this monofunctional area will be transformed into a vibrant urban district where living, working, and education come together. The previously closed factory site will be connected to the surrounding neighborhoods with new routes for slow traffic, thus becoming an integral part of Arnhem once again. The area will also receive a significant green injection; densification and greening go hand in hand. And, of course, the industrial past—the story of the place—will not be forgotten.

Rooted in the past and connected to the environment

The planning area lies on a fault line between the sandy soils of the Veluwe and the clay of the river landscape. This irregular boundary will become an urban 'link chain' with places to stay and facilities. A park landscape with detached blocks forms the cement with the surrounding area.In the Zijdekwartier, 568 homes will be added in an environment that keeps the history of industrial heritage alive. The characteristic tree-lined square forms the green frame of four quadrants, with a central 'runner' as its backbone; from entrance square to mobility hub.

Green and layered

The high urban density goes hand in hand with a generous share of public space. An extensive network of wadis, green transitions, and informal meeting places stimulates social contact and ensures a climate-adaptive design. The campus-like park zone connects the area to the surrounding neighborhoods, while the inner world offers space for small-scale facilities, community rooms, and living galleries. In this way, a former factory site makes way for a future-proof urban district, anchored in the past and connected to the city.
